Vivo Communication Technology is a Chinese tech subsidiary of BBK electronics. The company designs and makes smartphones and their accessories. Thanks to a savvy product placement in Captain America: Civil War, Vivo phones have officially become part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as Tony Stark and Steve Rogers used Vivos to communicate with one another.
That was part of a global push for the company to get further than its home base in the Chinese market.
Launching the Brand
Vivo started in 2009 in Shenzhen, China. It was founded by entrepreneur Shen Wei, and it now employs sixteen hundred hundred people to manufacture and sell its products. The company’s name means “life” in the Esperanto language.
In just a few short years, the company expanded to become one of the top ten phone companies in the world, commanding almost three percent of the market worldwide in 2015.
Vivo has spread quickly from its base in China. Today, it has operations across Asia. The countries served by Vivo include India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Myanmar, Malaysia, the Philippines, Russia, Nepal, Cambodia, China, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. The company continues to expand, and it’s now in more than one hundred countries around the world.
The company is now based out of Dongguan, but its R&D is based in Nanjing and Shenzhen.
This cell phone mega company distributes software through its own Vivo app store. They have a proprietary Android operating system, which is known as Funtouch OS. Vivo has risen to the top of the cell phone market in large part due to its reliable and independent software. The company is part of the BBK family of brands. These include major players like Oppo, OnePlus, and Realme. BBK makes a whole host of products, including DVD players, digital cameras, and of course cell phones. Growth Through Marketing
Vivo has greatly expanded its offerings in large part through its extensive marketing efforts. The company is a title sponsor of cricket mega league the Indian Premier League. It’s also the official smartphone of the FIFA World Cups in 2018 and 2022. The company sponsors India’s Pro Kabaddi League. In addition, Vivo is a sponsor of the NBA in China, partnering with the Golden State Warriors and Stephen Curry for brand endorsement in China and the Philippines.
Then there’s that little deal with Captain America, Iron Man, and Marvel Studios.
The company has moved into mobile game sponsorship as well, hitting at the heart of its market. It’s a title sponsor of the PUBG Mobile Club Open, one of the largest mobile gaming tournaments on Earth.
As Vivo continues to expand its brand, the company is increasing its marketing efforts across the globe. More marketing means more reach for Vivo, and that means a bright future for this leader in cell phones.
